A Nova Cultura do Hospital Júlio de Matos /The New Culture of the Júlio de Matos Hospital presents , from the 15 th of November, in its Multipurpose Space, a showcase of video art: Vtape. The sample brings side by side 10 videos of 10 artists, including that of an artist inpatient, resident at the Júlio de Matos Hospital.
VTAPE is a personal exercise of reflection on the physical and social context of the site where the screening is taking place. The Júlio de Matos Hospital is a space where the stigma, the insanity and the hospital architecture are dominant presences, imposing both limits and challenges to the work of the participant artists. VTAPE is open to the public in the Multipurpose Space, an old kitchen of this hospital unit that has been converted, as the name indicates, into a space for exhibitions and other cultural activities.
The New Culture of the Júlio de Matos Hospital stimulates and promotes the artistic culture as a strategy to promote the well-being of the hospital’s community members. It aims at challenging the stigmas associated with mental illness, and promotes artistc practice as socialization bridges, whilst looking to value the human, cultural and artistic resources of the Júlio de Matos Hospital.

I am showing the videopiece Baamob, developed out of a conversation with the fine art students at Central Saint Martin’s when we had a workshop on conversational art and protest. The piece works best as a 3 channel-video play, so try and click play in the three videos simultaneously after setting the volume to max.
