m4: a mobile/modular/multiple urban centre

2001-2003

In 2000 the city of Frankfurt opened the debate on the development of the largest european urban entertainment centre in the empty former trains station. The site was named the European Quarter and the commissioning process -launched amongst selected architectural practices- was contested by the residents of the surrounding quarters whose desires for a public park were largely ignored. Led by a group of artists, architects and scholars, the Bauhaus Kolleg programme at the Bauhas Dessau Foundation took the site and the public discussion as the case study for its research project ‘Event City”. The m4, proposed as a multifunctional kiosk, suggested the idea of a public gift and symbolic occupation of the vacant land.

The project Event City was published as a book by Campus Verlag.
