A msdm house–studio–gallery não foi concebida como uma instituição, mas como uma necessidade. Entre 2015 e 2025, funcionou como um modelo móvel e incorporado de viver, fazer, publicar e mediar — emergindo da falta de espaços de estúdio acessíveis e do desejo de pensar, trabalhar e publicar a partir da vida quotidiana.

Enraizada na prática de mobile strategies of display and mediation (msdm), a house–studio–gallery operou através da reutilização adaptativa de edifícios devolutos em Londres. Estes espaços foram temporariamente habitados e activados como unidades autónomas que combinavam vida doméstica, produção artística, realização de exposições e trabalho editorial.

Em vez de separar estúdio, galeria e publicação, o modelo house–studio–gallery colocou-os em relação contínua. As exposições não eram pontos de chegada, mas momentos dentro de processos de investigação mais longos. A mediação acontecia em tempo real através de conversas, workshops, livros e instalações. A publicação não era documentação posterior ao acontecimento, mas uma extensão espacial e temporal integrante do próprio trabalho.

The msdm house–studio–gallery was not conceived as an institution, but as a necessity. Between 2015 and 2025, it functioned as a mobile, embodied model of living, making, publishing, and mediating — emerging from the lack of affordable studio space and from the desire to think, work, and publish from within everyday life.

Rooted in the practice of mobile strategies of display and mediation (msdm), the house–studio–gallery operated through the adaptive reuse of vacant buildings in London. These spaces were temporarily inhabited and activated as self-contained units combining domestic life, artistic production, exhibition-making, and editorial work.

Rather than separating studio, gallery, and publication, the house–studio–gallery model brought them into continuous relation. Exhibitions were not endpoints, but moments within longer research processes. Mediation unfolded in real time through conversations, workshops, books, and installations. Publishing was not documentation after the fact, but an integral spatial and temporal extension of the work itself.

Cada house–studio–gallery foi tratada como um sítio arqueológico do presente contemporâneo. Eram espaços marcados por vidas anteriores: armazéns industriais, oficinas, showrooms de electricidade, edifícios administrativos. As suas características arquitectónicas, resíduos e atmosferas moldaram tanto a prática fotográfica como a lógica curatorial de cada projecto.

Metodologias como a autoetnografia, a psicogeografia e a instalação responsiva ao lugar foram utilizadas para explorar o emaranhamento entre espaço doméstico, transformação urbana e espacialidade contestada. A house–studio–gallery tornou-se um contentor expandido para trabalho fotográfico íntimo, experimentação de arquivo e realização de exposições.

Each house–studio–gallery was treated as an archaeological site of the contemporary present. These were spaces marked by previous lives: industrial warehouses, workshops, electricity showrooms, administrative buildings. Their architectural features, residues, and atmospheres shaped both the photographic practice and the curatorial logic of each project.

Methodologies such as autoethnography, psychogeography, and site-responsive installation were used to explore the entanglement between domestic space, urban transformation, and contested spatiality. The house–studio–gallery became an expanded container for intimate photographic work, archival experimentation, and exhibition-making.

A publicação foi central à house–studio–gallery. Livros, cartões e matéria impressa funcionavam como arquitecturas móveis — transportando a investigação para além da duração temporária de cada edifício.

As publicações desenvolvidas durante este período incluem Blackchapel Woundings, Decomposition, News from Nowhere: Lockdown, Domenest: 21 Cards for Mobile Strategies of Display & Mediation e The Expanded Practice of the Artist’s Book: Immersion in the Artist’s Museum.

Publishing was central to the house–studio–gallery. Books, cards, and printed matter functioned as mobile architectures — carrying the research beyond the temporary lifespan of each building.

Publications developed during this period include Blackchapel Woundings, Decomposition, News from Nowhere: Lockdown, Domenest: 21 Cards for Mobile Strategies of Display & Mediation, and The Expanded Practice of the Artist’s Book: Immersion in the Artist’s Museum.

A house–studio–gallery constitui o terreno material e vivido a partir do qual emerge o manifesto msdm. Não é uma estrutura retrospectiva, mas uma prática acumulada — uma prática que continua a informar as actuais pedagogias da lentidão, metodologias editoriais e formas de mediação situada desenvolvidas hoje através da msdm.

O manifesto articula aquilo que a house–studio–gallery pôs em prática: viver como infraestrutura, publicar como método e mediar como uma prática relacional e mais-que-humana.

The house–studio–gallery constitutes the material and lived ground from which the msdm manifesto emerges. It is not a retrospective framework, but an accumulated practice — one that continues to inform current pedagogies of slowness, editorial methodologies, and forms of situated mediation developed through msdm today.

The manifesto articulates what the house–studio–gallery enacted: living as infrastructure, publishing as method, and mediation as a relational, more-than-human practice.

A fase msdm house–studio–gallery termina formalmente em 2025, mas as suas metodologias continuam a informar os projectos actuais da msdm. A atenção à investigação situada no lugar, o tratamento do espaço como colaborador, a integração da publicação como método e o compromisso com pedagogias lentas e situadas prolongam-se agora em novos contextos — incluindo lugares aquáticos, trabalho de campo ecológico, livros participativos e práticas editoriais computacionais.

The msdm house–studio–gallery phase formally concludes in 2025, but its methodologies continue to inform current msdm projects. The attention to place-based research, the treatment of space as collaborator, the integration of publishing as method, and the commitment to slow, situated pedagogies now extend into new contexts — including watery places, ecological fieldwork, participatory books, and computational editorial practices.
