EVIDENCING THE EAST END:
paula roush [BLACKCHAPEL] & Julie Cook [East London
Two photobook projects developed at the Stepney Way
Warehouse (Whitechapel) presented
as double site-specific installation
paula roush presents Blackchapel photobookwork and installation created during her residency at 85 Stepney Way, the warehouse occupied by msdm studios 2015-2017.
During her two- year stay, paula collected traces of the space's social history, from Red Lyon's ( Elizabethan theatre) archaelogical dig, LIFFE coffee and cocoa traders's grading room, to occult lines of influence that construe Whitechapel as a space where gothic fiction is part of everyday life.
Julie Cook presents The E.L.S.C. FILES (East London Strippers Collective), a collaborative book project that evidences the activism of a group of six women, juxtaposing this with the language of photographic portraiture and performance within an East London warehouse awaiting demolition and redevelopment.
