Hypnotic Highway is a photobook about the hypnotics crisis.
I travel regularly between London where I’m based and Lisbon, where mum lived on her own. This time, when mum called for help, I had no idea I would be coming home to a landscape of pills and hallucinations …the Hypnotic Highway…The photos were taken between the Lisbon apartment and the hospital, witnessing the impact of Zolpidol, a prescription sleeping aid, on mum’s physical and psychological condition.
Zolpidol is another name for Ambien, a prescription drug whose devastating effects are well documented in countless case courts and press accounts. Whilst I was looking after mum, I immersed myself in research, only to find out that her G.P had made her dependent on the same prescription drug that killed Heath Ledger at 28 and wiped out five years of Eminem’s life when he was in his 30s. The same drug that has transformed so many brilliant individuals into Ambien Zombies as they’re characterised in the press, people with no memories of their actions under the influence.
I read the report Living With A Prescription Drug Addict Mother Compelled Me To Fight Big Pharma and Win by lawyer Susan Chana Lask, on her Ambien Class Action I against Sanofi Aventis, the pharmaceutical company behind the hypnotics epidemic, and this helped me identify the politics surrounding the company whose logos printed in plastic bags I found lying around the house, with pills inside. I also was inspired by photographer Nan Goldin’s essay and collection of photographs detailing her addiction to Oxycontin and her campaign against Sackler’s family Purdue Pharma, the pharmaceutical company behind the opioids epidemics.
Mum’s physical body didn’t survive the hypnotics crisis and the journal I had started before her passing as a record of our time together, comes out now designed as a photobook masked as a personal photo-essay, but really meant as another call for action. As Susan Chana Lask wrote so eloquently "The doctors who killed my mother still practiced after her death. They never asked how she was. They are drug dealers."

Hypnotic Highway (Auto-estrada Hipnotica/ ou dos Hipnoticos) é um fotolivro sobre a crise dos hipnóticos. A pandemia das drogas prescritas estava a ter um impacto brutal nos Estados Unidos e na Europa, antes de o corona ter desviado a atencao para a pandemica do virus.
Viajo regularmente entre Londres, onde moro, e Lisboa, onde a mãe morava sozinha, quando em 2018 me pediu ajuda. Eu não imaginei que viria encontrar dentro da casa de familia uma paisagem de remedios e alucinações ... a Auto-estrada Hipnótica ...
As fotos foram tiradas entre o apartamento de Lisboa e o Hospital de Santa Maria, testemunhando o impacto do Zolpidol—uma droga prescrita para a insomnia—na condição física e psicológica da mãe.
Zolpidol é o nome pelo qual Ambien é conhecido na Europa, uma droga prescrita cujos efeitos devastadores estão bem documentados em inúmeros casos levados a tribunal e relatos de imprensa internacional. Enquanto eu cuidava da mãe, mergulhei na pesquisa, apenas para descobrir que a sua médica de familia a tinha tornado dependente do mesmo medicamento que matou o actor Heath Ledger aos 28 anos e destruiu cinco anos da vida do musico e rapper Eminem quando ele tinha 30 anos. A mesma droga que transformou tantas pessoas com vidas familiares e carreiras regulares em “Zombies-Ambien” como são conhecidos, pessoas sem lembrança das suas ações sob a influência da medicaçao, algumas das quais eu encontrei nas salas de espera do Hospital de Santa Maria, tambem a procura de ajuda.
Li o relatório Living With A Prescription Drug Addict Mother Compelled Me To Fight Big Pharma and Win “Vivendo Com Uma Mãe Viciada Em Drogas Prescritas Motivou-Me A Combater As Grandes Empresas Farmacêuticas E Sair Vitoriosa” da advogada Susan Chana Lask, acerca da sua Ambien Class Action I contra a Sanofi Aventis, a empresa farmacêutica por trás da epidemia hipnótica; esse texto ajudou-me a identificar o impacto nefaz da empresa cujos logotipos eu encontrei espalhados pela casa, impressos nos sacos plásticos vendidos pelas farmacias locais com os comprimidos la dentro . Também me inspirou o activismo e fotografias da fotógrafa Nan Goldin, detalhando sua dependência do Oxycontin e a sua campanha contra a família Sackler da Purdue Pharma, a empresa farmacêutica por trás da epidemia de opióides.
O corpo físico da mãe não sobreviveu à crise dos hipnóticos e o diário que comecei como registro de nosso tempo juntas, faz agora parte do fotolivro, que se trata de um ensaio fotográfico pessoal, assim como uma chamado à ação . Como Susan Chana Lask escreveu com tanta eloquência: “Os médicos que mataram minha mãe continuaram a praticar medicina após a sua morte. Eles nunca perguntaram como ela se encontrava. Eles são traficantes de drogas.”
