FOLLOW Y/OUR RIVER: Culture under current
Photobook Popup of Photography (BA) students, new works foregrounding water in photography, publishing, and everyday life.
The photobooks in the Popup were developed during the twelve week workshop Self Publishing and the Photobook taught by paula roush and tamara stoll at the Photography (BA Hons), School of Arts and Creative Industries (LSBU) in the academic year 2022-2023.
Students were invited to conduct fieldwork along the River Lea, to develop a narrative either on the Lea Valley or any other body of water/memorable water-related event, using transdisciplinary approaches including but not limited to photographic, geographical, ecological, and experiential.
These artworks were first exhibited at the Copeland Gallery in December of 2022, and are now published as photobooks for the Photobook Popup event in May of 2023.
Each student delved deep into their personal memories and experiences with water, engaging in a dialogue with their respective watery places, to craft visual stories that reflect our evolving relationship with landscape.
The Photobook Popup runs in parallel with the exhibition follow y/our river lea-minal edges: prompts for transitory states of being showcasing a new publication by paula roush, tamara stoll and hḗrā santos (msdm publications + road Less travelled press) at the Borough Road Gallery.

What I believe makes this module like some others
stand out from their counterparts within other similar institutes is it’s ability to take that much necessary additional step which deals with the realisation of what happens once a product has been made.
It is here that there is clear evidence of something special. The collectively curated and themed programme and the pop up shop is an excellent example of providing alternative first hand potentially transformative models for entrepreneurship and engagement for investment.
The production values of the books and zines demonstrated a sophistication and detailed engagement with the craft.
