KEY TERMS AND ACTIVITY to supplement brief for week 3
From the suggested works in the exhibitions, choose
one example of a Photowork and
one example of Topographic work
to present week 3 as contextual research for your project

  1. ----Photowork- artwork in which the photographic print plays a major role but is combined with other materials: frames, back or face mounting, (glass or other materials superimposed), paint or other artistic additions are all as equal as the photographic print itself [Caroline von Courten, Beyond the Photographic Surface A Study of the material condition in photography, Unseen mag 2015]
    ----------Things to consider in photoworks:
  2. How the photographic process materially influences the artwork
The process of experimenting with the image (darkroom, photoshop, printing)
Material layers left by using various image devices (scanners, photocopiers)
Relationship between materiality and subject matter: how the material surface of the photograph is made visible and relevant

  1. New Topographics- Photographic work in which the mapping of land use, including buildings, boundaries and other social phenomena is visible in mostly black-and-white prints of streets, warehouses, city centres, industrial sites and suburban houses. The New Topographics exhibition in 1975 [link to wikipedia page] was the moment when the everyday, the banal appears as legitimate photographic subject, and as social documentary.

------------Things to consider in topographic works:
  2. How the project is researched:
Photographer as researcher (using a system) and storyteller (or commentator)
Visual style: how it is repeated with consistency
How is meaning produced through groups, series or sequences
