TITLE: The Red Ray of Light

The Red Ray of Light* is a series of photographs documenting a fleeting phenomenon—a red ray of light that reflected across Unit 8, msdm studio, when we were based at the Barratt Industrial Estate. This site, facing the tidal River Lea near the Thames estuary, was a place of constant atmospheric change. (msdm publications, 2018). Now, the landscape is unrecognisable, transformed after msdm studio’s displacement and overtaken by yet more luxury flats—unaffordable for most of us. Printing these images onto transparent media feels especially prescient, each layer capturing memory, trauma, and loss, weaving in and out of perception as we navigate spaces under the perpetual threat of erasure. Yet, we artists—the unwaged artworkers of the world—never cease to see the light wherever we go; Is it our purpose to see/ be the light on earth?
